This project is a response to the rise of conservative content online, addressing the romanticisation of the 1950’s housewife and highlighting the serious consequences of financial dependency and submission in a playful and non-confrontational way.
Mrs. Wife is a short, web-based mini-game in which players aim to become the "perfect" housewife. Throughout the experience, users are presented with a series of tasks that allow them to organise their day, with each decision gradually revealing the consequences of their choices. The game explores themes of dependency and identity through playful interactions and a mid-century visual aesthetic.
Invisible Strings is a fictional organisation focused on highlighting social divides. The game is presented as one of its initiatives, designed to break down barriers and reveal consequences in a subtle, non-confrontational way.
I drew inspiration from Pop Art, Atomic age design as well as 1950’s ads and newspapers. It was important to place this game in the 1950’s highlighting the time which Tradwives strive for. Developing this specific style and assets took months of iteration which can be seen in my process book.
Using HTML, CSS and JS I managed to create a fully functioning mini game. The game is user driven and changes depending on the choices made. This was a small challenge which allowed me to get even more comfortable using JS. Besides vanilla JS I also used JS libraries such as GSAP and Howl.
